Composite waterproofing – reliable protection against damp for bathrooms and showers
A professionally installed composite waterproofing system protects wall and floor surfaces from moisture penetration. It is applied directly beneath the final floor covering and, together with sealing tapes, internal and external corners, and sealing collars, forms a continuous waterproofing layer.
Particularly in showers, bathrooms and other damp areas, it is important not just to waterproof the surface itself. Transitions between walls and floors, pipe penetrations, floor drains and other connections require special attention.
Our composite waterproofing products are tailored to these different areas and enable the creation of a reliable waterproofing system using components designed to work together.
Where is a composite waterproofing system used?
- Showers and floor-level showers
- to protect wall and floor surfaces from water ingress
- Bathrooms and damp areas – particularly in areas subject to regular exposure to water
- Wall and floor junctions – with sealing tape and suitable moulded parts
- Pipe penetrations – with elastic sealing collars
- Floor drains – with sealing collars or sealing components designed for this purpose
The right components for a secure waterproofing system
A composite waterproofing system consists of more than just a surface-level waterproofing layer. The details are crucial: corners, transitions, connections and penetrations must be permanently integrated into the waterproofing layer.
In this category, you will find the right products for the complete installation – from surface waterproofing, through sealing tapes and moulded parts, to sealing collars for pipe penetrations and floor drains.
Composite seal using liquid membrane and sealing tape
In bathrooms, showers and other damp areas, it is essential to prevent water from penetrating the building structure. A professionally installed composite waterproofing system provides a continuous protective layer beneath the subsequent surface finish.
Preparing the substrate
The substrate must be solid, clean, dry and free from dust and any residues that could impair adhesion. Any unevenness or defects should be properly prepared or levelled before waterproofing work begins.
Applying the liquid membrane and incorporating sealing tapes
The liquid membrane is applied over the entire surface using a trowel or a suitable roller. At wall and floor junctions, as well as in corners, the non-woven-backed sealing tapes are embedded into the fresh waterproofing compound. Pipe penetrations, floor drains and other critical connections are integrated into the waterproofing using the sealing collars and moulded fittings designed for this purpose. Particular care should be taken when finishing all transitions and penetrations, as these areas are exposed to increased moisture.
Apply the second waterproofing layer
Once the first layer has dried sufficiently, the second layer of liquid membrane is applied over the entire surface. In doing so, the previously embedded sealing tapes and moulded parts are also fully incorporated into the waterproofing. The required drying times and layer thicknesses depend on the specifications of the respective product.
Preparing a mineral substrate
If the surface is subsequently to be finished with a mineral lime plaster, a suitable mineral-based finish is applied over the cured composite waterproofing. To this end, full-surface reinforcement is created using glass fibre mesh and lime bonding plaster. This creates a mineral surface once again, which can then be prepared for further decorative finishing.
Seamless surfaces in the bathroom
Outside the wet areas directly exposed to water, the prepared surface can then be finished, for example, with Stucco Veneziano, Marmorino or creative plaster. For suitable wall surfaces within the wet room, Tadelakt can be used as a decorative mineral surface. Stucco Extra, impregnated with stone oil, is also an option. For the floor inside the shower, depending on the layout, we recommend, for example, tiles, natural stone or a suitable shower tray. Decorative mineral design options are also available for appropriately prepared bathroom floors outside this area.
